今回はボストンのインディレーベル, Too Far Gone RecordsのBillyにインタビューしました
先日のThurstのレビューを書かせていただいたのも, 彼から連絡をいただいたのがきっかけです

1. まずは自己紹介をお願いします
やあ, 僕はBilly Philhowerだ 24歳でマサチューセッツ州のボストンに住んでるよ
2. ボストンを拠点としてレーベルを運営されていますが, ボストンはどんな街ですか? (個人的にはハードコアバンドや有名な野球チームの印象があります)
良い印象を持ってくれてありがとう! ボストンは活気に満ちた音楽のコミュニティがある素晴らしい街だよ. ここに住むにはお金が少しかかるけど, それについての文句なんか無いね. 僕は2012年に学校に入った時からここに居て, 今は3年ほどフルタイムで働いてるんだ. ボストンでは常にスポーツ, 音楽, アートショーなんかが行われているよ. 僕の好みとしてはちょっと違うけれど問題ないね. バンドとかのツアーでもボストンを回らないことの方が少ないし, 本当に良い所だよ
3. Too Far Gone Recordsを始めたきっかけはなんですか?
僕がレーベルを始めたのは, 単にショーに行くだけじゃなくてDIYのミュージックシーンで積極的に役割を持っていきたいと思ったからだね. (そこに問題があったからじゃないよ) あと, 音楽のビジネス面についても興味があったから. 並行してビジネススクールに通ってマーケティングについて学んでいたっていうのもあったからね
4. これまで幾つもレーベルとしてリリースをしてきたと思いますが, バンドやアーティストをリリースする動機はなんでしょうか?
みんなの注目と耳を傾けさせるために100万と1のバンドが争ってる. 僕のレーベルの動機はリリースするアーティストのアートをより多くの人に聴いてもらうのを手助けすることだよ. それが素晴らしくもありそうでもない時もあるけどそれが目的だね
5. レーベル運営の中で何か印象に残っていることはありますか?
もちろんだよ! 数が多すぎるくらいだ. 2014年のHoly ShadowとKoala Tea Timeのツアー, レーベルやその他のバンドのための沢山のショーのブッキングをしたこと -1つの週末のショーを振り返るとニューヨークのモントクレアでshakusky., Forth Wanderers, P.S. 118, Be Still Cody, Three Man Cannonなんかの沢山の友達とショーを開催したんだ-, Our Sunday Affairsのデビューアルバムのレコーディングに居たこと...とかね.
6. 2016年のリリース以降今回のリリースに至るまで2年程間が開きましたが, この2年間は何をされていたのでしょうか?
僕はフルタイムのデジタルマーケティングの仕事に集中して, 週末は出来るだけ多くのローカルショーを観に行ったんだ. 2016年以降自分で幾つかの企画を打って, そして僕がToo Far Goneとして関わっていたi hate sexを含めた2つのレコードを新たに2017年にサイドレーベルとして始めたDay Crashからリリースしたんだ.
7. 今回久しぶりのリリースとしてTHURSTのアルバムをカセットとしてリリースしますが, 彼らをリリースしようと思ったきっかけと, そしてまたレーベルを再始動するきっかけはなんでしょうか?
僕はリリースするタイミングを逃していたんだ! ここ数年はとても歯がゆいものだったよ. また自分の仕事を通じて他のレーベルの音源をプロモーションしていたんだ これも素晴らしいことだけど, 間接的に自分としては見逃したこともあったんだよ...
8. 普段からリリースされる以外にも音楽を聴かれていると思いますが, どのような音楽が好きですか? 今興味があるバンドやシーンについても聞かせて下さい
普段僕はModest Mouseが好きだとみんなには伝えているんだ(数年前に彼らのカバーコンピレーションをリリースしたくらいにね), でも最近は正直そんなに聴いてないかな. 最近だとNana GrizolやThe Buttertones, Ape Up!, 新しいBetter Oblivion Community Centerのアルバムとかだね. また偏ってるけどTHURSTに夢中になってるよ. 彼らがとても良いと思ってるんだ.
9. 様々なバンドがリリースやツアーを行っています 現在のシーンについてどのような印象を持っているでしょうか?
僕が思うに"シーン"は大きく変化すると思う. Too Far Goneとして最後にレコードを出して以降もそれはとても変わったよ. いくつかの友達が居なくなっちゃったり, 幾つかのバンドが休む為に楽器を置いたり, またバンドが戻ってきたり, とかね. 全体的に見て, "シーン"は他のシーンや世界と潮の満ち引きのように押し寄せ押し寄されながら適応し続けると思うね. 長年のシーンに対する自分の意識がどんな風に変わったかを見直すのはとても魅力的だと思うよ.
10. 今回のリリースをきっかけにまたレーベル運営を再始動されますね これからはどのようなレーベルにしていこうとお考えでしょうか?
僕の1つのポリシーとしてその音源を朝の通勤の時に聴きたいと思わないなら, その音源をリリースしないということだね. 必ずしも"特別な"レーベルにしたいという願望は無いけど, 取り残されたアーティストを出来るだけ多く持ち上げる為のプラットホームとして使うことはとても重要なことだと思ってる. それ以外は好きなアーティストの音源をリリースして, それを聴いてもらえるようにするだけかな.
11. では最後にメッセージ等があれば教えて下さい
アーティストがアートを作り続けられるように, あなたが好きなアーティストをサポートして, ライブに足を運んでくれ. ありがとう

This time I interviewed Billy of Boston's Indie label, Too Far Gone Records. Please check it out.
1. First of all, please introduce yourself.
Hi, my name is Billy Philhower. I’m 24 and live in Boston, Massachusetts.
2. You are based in Boston, but what kind of city is Boston? (Personally I have the impression of a hardcore band or a famous baseball team.)
Hah, love your impression honestly! Boston is a great city with a vibrant music community. It’s getting a little expensive to live in, but I really can’t complain about the city at all. I’ve been here since 2012 when I started school up here and now have been working here full-time for nearly 3 years. There’s always something going on - sports, music, art shows, etc. It gets a little bit too cold for my liking, but that’s alright. There’s not really many tours that don’t stop in Boston, which is awesome.
3. Why did you start a Too Far Gone Records?
I started it originally because I wanted to take a more active role in the DIY music scene outside of simply going to shows (not that there’s anything wrong with that!). I also wanted to take a stab at the business side of music, which lined up well with me going to business school and studying marketing.
4. I think that it has been released as a number of labels so far, but what is the motivation to release bands and artists?
There are a million and one bands out there that are all vying for your attention and ears. My motivation with the label is to help a few of them get their art heard by more people. Sometimes it goes great, sometimes not so much, but that’s the aim.
5. Do you have memories as you manage the label?
Of course! Too many to count! Touring with Holy Shadow and Koala Tea Time in 2014. Booking a ton of shows for bands on the label and others - one weekend in particular throwing back to back shows in Montclair, NJ with tons of friends playing including shakusky., Forth Wanderers, P.S. 118, Be Still Cody, Three Man Cannon and more. Being in the studio with Our Sunday Affairs recording their debut album.
So many moments in my life have been shaped or defined by music and, since starting the label, a lot of them can be tied back to Too Far Gone in some capacity.
6. After the release in 2016, it took about two years until this release. What have been done for the past two years?
I’ve mostly been focusing on my full-time digital marketing job and going to as many local shows as possible. I’ve thrown a few shows myself since 2016 and I also put out 2 records through a side label called Day Crush that I started in 2017, including one from I Hate Sex who I had previously worked on with Too Far Gone.
7. This time you release the “Thurst” album as a cassette, What made you decide to release them, and also what triggered you to restart the label again?
I’ve really missed putting out records! It’s been a solid itch in my side for a couple years now. Also, through my job, I’m constantly promoting music from other labels - this is awesome too, but indirectly made me miss it even more.
8. I think that you listen to music besides being released, but what kind of music do you like? Please tell us about the bands and scenes you are interested in now.
Normally I tell people that Modest Mouse is my favorite band of all time (peep the cover compilation I released a few years back), but I honestly don’t listen to them a ton these days. Lately, I’ve been super into Nana Grizol, The Buttertones, Ape Up! and that new Better Oblivion Community Center. Also - I’m biased, but I’m obsessed with Thurst. I think they are so, so good.
9. Various bands are releasing and tours. What kind of impression do you have about the current scene?
The “scene” changes a lot I think and I think it’s changed significantly since I last put out a record through Too Far Gone. Some faces have come and gone, some bands have laid their instruments to rest, some bands have come back, etc. All in all, I think the scene will continue to push on and adapt to the outside world and its ebbs and flows. I think it’s fascinating to think about how my views on the scene have changed over the years.
10. This release will trigger the restart of label management. What Kind of label do you think would be in the future?
My one policy has always been that I refuse to put out a record if it wouldn’t be something that I’d be caught listening to on the train to work in the morning. I don’t have any specific desire to be a “kind” of label necessarily, but I do think that it’s incredibly important to use the platform that I have to try and lift up marginalized artists as much as possible. Outside of that, I just want to put out music by artists that I love and help them get heard.
11. Finally, please tell me if there is a message.
Support artists that you like so they can keep making art. Get to the gig. Hug your mom.
